High Heel Shoes and Ballroom Dancing
Do you ever wonder how it is possible that professional women ballroom dancers are able to move so well in high heels? It is difficult for some women to even walk in high heels let alone dance. There are some interesting facts to know about how these women master their craft.
First, they get themselves in excellent physical shape so that they can withstand the fast movements and gyrations that come with ballroom dancing. Second, they master the special technique of dancing in high heel shoes. Third, the design and manufacturing of the high heel shoes are very unique. For example, the shoes include steel shank for arch support, suede soles for gripping and sliding on standard hardwood floors, light weight threading to help reduce the foot fatigue factor, and extra cushioning for comfort.
But what most people don’t know is that the high heel shoes women wear during the actual competition are slightly different than the shoes worn during practice. Practice shoes have a lower, wider heel than the high heel shoes worn during the competition, and have better foot support as well. The lower, wide heels offer the best stability, helping to improve balance on the dance floor. These practice shoes are the type of shoes you will find on the dance instructors.
All that being said, it is still amazing how well these women can move in their high heels. It reminds me of how well professional hockey players can skate on the ice. Most people cannot even skate a few feet even if you hold their hand along the way. Yet a professional hockey player can skate at top speeds and stop on a dime when need be. So the next time you are watching Dancing With the Stars or another ballroom dancing competition on television, make sure you look at the dance shoes on the woman. Their footwork and athletic talent will amaze you!
